admission

In order to be admitted into the BFA program in the Department of Dance at OSU, students must rank in the top percentage of the undergraduate audition and be admitted to the University. An audition is required for admission into the dance program. Students interested in majoring in dance must attend one of two auditions that will take place in the Autumn and Winter quarters. While the application deadline for transfer students extends to June of 2010, transfer applicants must attend one of the two auditions listed below for consideration.

audition information
November 6-7, 2009 and February 12-13, 2010

Auditions for perspective students expecting to enter the undergraduate dance major program in Autumn Quarter 2010 will be held Saturday, November 7, 2009 and Saturday, February 13, 2010 in Sullivant Hall, 1813 North High Street.

In order to participate in the audition, each student must submit an audition application by October 23, 2009 (Autumn audition) or
January 29, 2010 (Winter audition). Late applications will not be accepted.

The audition will consist of some ballet work, short modern movement phrases that may include, African based technique, rhythm, or improvisation.
A prepared solo is not an audition requirement.

Major considerations in the audition are:

1. basic skills 9. movement flow
2. coordination 10. spatial awareness
3. strength 11. rhythmic awareness
4. flexibility 12. musicality
5. alignment 13. synthesis of movement phrases
6. articulation 14. stylistic versatility
7. kinesthetic awareness 15. presence/performance quality
8. weight/mobility 16. artistry

Through this audition, a select number of students are admitted to the program. On average, 30–35 students are admitted as dance majors.

The BFA program in Dance follows a course curriculum that begins in the Autumn quarter of each academic year. For this reason, students, including transfers, can only be admitted into the program for Autumn quarter. Because Autumn admission is the most competetive, students interested in majoring in dance should apply to the University as early as possible so that we may be notified of your admissions status in a timely fashion. Please download the undergraduate application packet (.pdf) for more detailed information about the program, auditions, and open class day.

To receive an OSU admissions application and deadline information for regular, early and transfer admission, contact the Office of Undergraduate Admissions at 614-292-3980, or visit their website at http://undergrad.osu.edu/admissions.html.
